SXSW 2012: Now that the lineup's been made official, what do we plan on seeing?
Each year, the SXSW Film Festival debuts bigger and better movies, and (based on the almost-complete lineup of films that SXSW organizers released earlier today) 2012 looks ready to continue that trend: 21 Jump Street, Cabin in The Woods, Casa de mi Padre, and a slew of other high-profile films will be making their debut at SXSW this year, and-- as per usual-- Examiner.com's Comedy Examiner will be on-hand to cover it all. Wanna know more, including what films we're planning on seeing at SXSW 2012? Sure you do. Read on for the info, my gentle Examiner readers...
Austin, TX is home to a number of glorious ongoing events-- the Mondo Mystery Movie series, Master Pancake Theater screenings, Old Murder House Theater shows, virtually anything that takes place at the Alamo Drafthouse (and there's always something going on at the Drafthouse)-- but the two that really make living in Austin worthwhile are the South-by-Southwest Film Festival and Fantastic Fest.

Each of these film festivals are held almost precisely six months apart, which means that the same thing happens every year: one buys a ticket to Fantastic Fest (or SXSW), spends a solid week watching an unreasonable number of movies, and then-- by the end of that week-- the ticket-buyer collapses, competely exhausted from the whole ordeal. It then takes about six months for one to recharge their "Willing-to-sit-in-a-movie-theater-all-day" batteries, which times out perfectly: just as you've gotten over your last case of "film festival exhaustion", you realize it's time for the next one. Whoever planned all this out was a genius.
We know all this because we've covered Fantastic Fest and SXSW for the past several years here at Comedy Examiner HQ, and this year'll be no different: this March, we'll be on the ground and in the trenches for a solid week, bringing you only the best in SXSW coverage. As has been our policy in the past, you'll be getting a combination of news, reviews, interviews, and "festival diaries" (these capture the festival-going experience for all the gentle Examiner readers who can't make it to Austin).
SXSW won't start for another few weeks (March 9th, to be exact), but today SXSW organizers released an almost-complete lineup of the films scheduled to play during this year's festival. There are literally dozens of films on that lineup-- including a few big-name comedies that will be holding their world premiere at this year's festival, like Casa de mi Padre (with Will Ferrell) and 21 Jump Street (with Jonah Hill)-- so we've whittled that list down to the twenty films we're planning on seeing (you don't care about all the flicks we're not planning on seeing, do you?).
In no particular order, here are the top 10 films we're excited to see (and to provide coverage for) at SXSW 2012, starting March 9th and wrapping on March 18th:
Cabin in The Woods
21 Jump Street
God Bless America
Just Like Being There
The Comedy
Casa de mi Padre
The Raid
The Babymakers
Beauty is Embarrassing
Small Apartments
And here are the ten other films you can planning on hearing about in our SXSW 2012 coverage: The Hunter, Frankie Goes Boom, Jeff, Seeking Asian Female, Killer Joe, Girls, Keyhole, Code of The West, Scarlet Road, and Dream as a Life. That's a whole bunch of films to get through in just over a week, but our plan-- as always-- is to have reviews up in the order in which we see the films, on the day (or night) that we see 'em. It's a tough schedule to keep, yes, but we've discovered that providing writeups every few days only results in more work over a shorter timespan. And so, day-by-day coverage will continue until someone comes up with a smarter solution to this very first-world problem.
Head on over to the SXSW 2012 website to read about some of the other events, performers, and films scheduled to appear at this year's festival.
Better yet, you can check in with us daily once SXSW 2012 kicks off on March 9th, but here's the smarter bet: hit the "Subscribe" button up top to get all of our SXSW coverage (note: this year, we've got access to both music and film, so don't be surprised if we offer up a few music-related dispatches) delivered straight to your inbox, free of charge, the moment they're published. You'll get all of our up-to-the-minute SXSW news between March 9th and March 18th, and after SXSW wraps you'll get all of our non-SXSW-related content (consider it a signing bonus).
Stay tuned, folks: March is going to be insane.
And stay tuned for more funny videos, news, reviews, interviews, and more from Comedy Examiner HQ in the near future, folks.
