The journalist in me really liked "Big Miracle." The critic liked it, but knows it's not a great movie. For the critic it's more of a guilty pleasure.
It's a sweet real-life story about the rescue of three gray whales trapped under ice in Alaska. A reporter (John Krasinski) discovers 凤鸣轩言情小说the whales by accident and decided to point his camera their way. His story on the matter got the help and assistance of his hippie ex-girlfriend (Drew Barrymore), the Alaskan governor (Stephen Root) and a good-old fashioned oil baron with good publicity on the brain (Ted Danson).
The journalist in me loved it because it was extremely fair to everyone involved. Although the motives of all the characters aren't hidden, the characters are all still shown as people making the decisions they want. The Alaskan locals, for example, want to harvest the three whales. This infuriates the hippie, who lays one of her many guilt trips about humanitarianism or some other peace-loving jive on them.
I think a lesser movie would have made them bad guys, but "Big Miracle" cuts to them talking in private, obviously confused because they've hunted whales for food and oil for centuries. It's what they do, and this movie respects that. It respects the oil baron, too.
None of these characters really change their general opinions on anything as the movie moves along, but that doesn't stop them from getting together to save the whales.
I think it's hard to dislike any每夜一个鬼故事 of the main characters in this movie, even the hippie. I'm not sure if they were trying to play her loudspeaker-bearing antics for laughs, but I was definitely laughing. I find protestors way easier to tolerate when they're funny.
The film critic in me knows that there is way too much going on in "Big Miracle." There's all of the aforementioned characters, all with fully-explained motives.
There's also two love stories going on. The first a quirky love triangle involving the journalist, the hippie and another journalist played by Kristen Bell. It's not very interesting and it goes exactly where you expect.
The second is between a National Guard colonel (Dermot Mulroney) and the White House executive assistant of Cabinet Affairs (Vinessa Shaw). Their story was way more interesting than the stupid love triangle, but didn't get much screen time.
The actors sometimes seem to be stuck in different movies. Krasinski is in an inspirational movie, but Danson is definitely in a comedy. 校园鬼故事Barrymore is in an infomercial.
Did I mention it has whales? They're in it a bunch and are extremely cute and likable.
I'm extremely conflicted on whether to recommend "Big Miracle." Both parts of me liked it but know it has no direction. It just sort of goes everywhere until it has told everyone's story (to some extent) and is, at times, a little boring.
I think I'm going to recommend it, with reservations.
It's too likable for me to not recommend it, and if they'd just cut out the stupid love triangle, it'd be a pretty good movie.
It's also half impossible to vote against extremely cute whales.
"Big Miracle" is rated PG for language.
