UNDOUBTEDLY many reviews will spout lines about “not wasting your time with this movie” or seeing it is “time well spent” but I’m going to work hard to avoid those sorts of one-liners. But I make no promises. When I saw the trailer for this In Time, I got very excited about its premise.
Th e idea is we stop ageing at 25, and a digital clock on our arm counts down from a year.
From then on it is up to you to work, scrounge, inherit or steal more time for yourself.
Because time in the future is money. Coffee and food costs a certain amount of minutes off your clock while one night in a hotel room might cost you a few weeks.
The whole thing is very intriguing.
Justin Timberlake stars as the impoverished Will Salas. Will lives in the ghetto and lives day to day usually just earning enough time to live through the night.
When a wealthy man with 102 years on his clock gives Will his time before committing suicide, Will makes it to the upper-class neighbourhood where the rich people have thousands of years on the digital arm clocks.
The police get involved and Will and his new, attractive, fiesty and rich friend Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried) end up on the run from timekeeper cop Mr Leon (Cillian Murphy from Inception and Batman Begins) in the process becoming a futuristic version of Bonnie and Clyde.
It all sounds very complicated in words but watching the film engrosses you in a world where time is not only money but so precious that you will die if you don’t have enough of it.
In Time was written by Andrew Niccol who wrote and directed sci-fi flick Gattaca as well as penning The Truman Show and The Terminal.
I have heard a lot of comments that Timberlake doesn’t work as an actor but I can’t help but disagree.
Sure his role in The Social Network was fairly easy to play but the far more complex character he played in Alpha Dog was impressive acting. Add to that his skills as a comic actor and Saturday Night Live host and it is clear that JT has a future in front of the camera.
