Q Given the recent quakes in the Bay Area, can I interest you in discussing things you should carry in your car in case a major quake occurs while you are on the road? We spend a great deal of time in our cars, and having a simple pack stashed away in the trunk could be of great value in the event of a major shaker. Quakes and other disasters have a tendency to not pay attention to our schedules, and there is a chance that we may not be at home or work when a quake hits. Just a thought I wanted to send your way.

A A good thought it is. I store emergency supplies in all the Roadshow cars. Here are Tully's tips:

Paper maps so as to determine an alternative route should roads/bridges/overpasses be impassable. Highlight alternative routes in advance. Know where you would go at different points along your commute route. Why paper? Cell towers could be out and map applications on phones may not be able to receive data.

Identify an out-of-area contact, as calls out of the area are more likely to work than calls within the area after a quake.

A small first-aid kit, which you can get for a few dollars, with bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, etc.

A small flashlight with extra batteries. Find batteries that have a long shelf life, and a flashlight that is small, easy to carry and bright.

Heavy work gloves. Rubble could be a problem, as could

glass and other debris.
